How I spent my Summer Vacation
Dennis Perrin
Here in New England, summer is precious. With fairly long, and often very cold winters, the outdoor painting season is relatively short. So "make hay while the sun shines" becomes "paint plein air paintings while the temperatures are warm and the sun is out." With a few exceptions, mostly to seek a more controlled light in my summer studio or on our beautiful porch, nearly all the paintings I've painted since the first of June have been outdoors, in the open light, with the brilliant sun illuminating the subject. And I've had the best summer of painting I've ever had, painting at least 25 paintings during that stretch. I've explored my two favorite subjects, flowers and figures, and more specifically peonies, roses, and my beautiful wife, muse, and model, Aimee Fields Perrin. Rather then spend lots of time writing about what I did, I'll post the paintings I've done since June 1st to give you an idea of how I spent my summer. Up first is the most recent, the one that is the culmination of all that I've done leading up to it.
I call it "Late Summer Sun," a large, 30" x 24" oil on canvas done entirely plein air.
